Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen in Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003)

Idiotic

I was never the biggest fan of "Dumb and Dumber", I found it short on plot which whilst full of gags the incessant nature of them made it too much. But after watching "Dumb and Dumberer" I would willingly love to have that same feeling because this prequel is terrible, in fact it is beyond terrible. Even slimmer on plot and full of cast off gags there is nothing entertaining about this movie which even sees Eugene Levy struggling to make some of the corniest gags funny.

After being home schooled by his mother Harry Dunne (Derek Richardson - Reeker) is finally off to school and it is on the way that he runs into Lloyd Christmas (Eric Christian Olsen - Not Another Teen Movie), literally. So starts an idiotic friendship which sees them being put into special needs class the minute they enter the school as Principal Collins (Eugene Levy - American Pie 2) has a daft idea to embezzle money out of the school.

Shia LaBeouf in Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003)

There is just one positive to "Dumb and Dumberer" and that is Eric Christian Olsen as his interpretation of the young Lloyd is almost spot on. In truth what I am saying is that Olsen does a good Jim Carrey impersonation and has his looks and mannerisms down to the point at times he is funny. Unfortunately Derek Richardson as Harry is not so good and he reminded me more of Doofy from "Scary Movie". Seeing that part of the appeal of this movie should be Richardson and Olsen recreating Harry and Lloyd as teenagers it only half works.

But the casting is not the only problem as the plot line this time is so weak that it is not even enough as a vehicle to set up gags. And trust me it gets worse as those gags are generally abysmal, in fact I don't remember a single joke which made me laugh. All of which must be bad because I watched "Dumb and Dumberer" expecting the worst and yet it was worse than I even imagined.

What this all boils down to is that "Dumb and Dumberer" is bad, not entertainingly bad just simply bad. The only slight praise I have is for Eric Christian Olsen who at least gets close to imitating Jim Carrey's Lloyd.
