Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Marvel does Razzle Dazzle

Adventurer and criminal Peter Quill finds himself being pursued by various people when he steals a strange looking orb. It brings him together with an eclectic bunch including Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot who become known as "The Guardians of the Galaxy" as they try to prevent Ronan the Accuser from getting his evil hands on the powerful orb.

I have an ominous feeling that when I say that I don't know what all the fuss is about when it comes to "Guardians of the Galaxy" that I might get some hateful comments from those who are a little over zealous when it comes to the movies they like. Unfortunately that it is the case as whilst "Guardians of the Galaxy" is certainly entertaining most of it didn't blow me away and at times felt like a movie to reliant on special effects to dazzle than a decent story.

Dazzle is actually a very good word for "Guardians of the Galaxy" because Chris Pratt, who is undoubtedly the star of the movie, does dazzle as a comically cool hero who dances to 70s disco tunes whilst he is pulling of crimes. He is the sort of cool guy who even in the face of danger has a quip and time to flirt with someone. And Pratt pulls it off making him the most entertaining part of the movie. In fairness to the others they all play their parts well especially Dave Bautista who shows a nice touch when it comes to big guy, soft guy comedy but it is Pratt's performance which steals many a scene.

But when you look past the performances and the eclectic bunch of characters what you have left is a rather ordinary storyline and a lot of special effects. Now when I was younger the more effects the more I tended to love a movie but now things are different and to be honest I would have enjoyed "Guardians of the Galaxy" more if there had been a much more interesting storyline and they cut back on the dazzle factor of the special effects. I am actually kind of shocked how basic the storyline is even though it is clear this movie is little more than an introduction to the odd ball bunch of characters who makes up the Guardians of the Galaxy.

What this all boils down to is that "Guardians of the Galaxy" has some modern day razzle dazzle with special effects, comically heroic characters and enjoyable performances. But there is so much dazzle that the storyline ends up lacking something.
