Amber Riley in My One Christmas Wish (2015)

The Best Christmas Party Ever

Are you tired of all the Christmas movies which are filled with cheese and sugar coated goodness and instead want something more uplifting then seek out "My One Christmas Wish" as this is a Christmas movie inspired by a true story. But this isn't some cheerful little movie which is a bombardment of goodness, this is a movie which takes use on a journey in to the life of Jackie Turner, a young woman who day in day out helps others but has a lot of pain deep inside when it comes to her loneliness but turns it around to use her situation to help others.

Now I am not going to go in to a great deal of detail as "My One Christmas Wish" is not just another Christmas movie but one which needs to be experienced. What I will say is that whilst it is inspiring and touching it also at times falls in to the traps of after school specials. For example there is a scene where Jackie spots one of the orphans shoplifting and she not only talks her out of it but also talks the shop keeper from calling the police in a sort of teaching moment. But these moments don't spoil the over all tone of the movie and in truth are more in keeping than if they had done something grittier.

Of course a big part of the movie's appeal is Amber Riley with I am sure many a "Glee" fan seeking this out because of her. But Riley is a fantastic young actress whose natural good nature and likeability is exactly what the role calls for as well as her wonderful singing voice which she gets to use but not over use.

What this all boils down to is that "My One Christmas Wish" is a simple, touching and uplifting movie which is perfect to ground you after watching many a sugar coated Christmas movie you usually find on TV.
