Eve Meyer and Chuck Henderson in Operation Dames (1959) (aka: Girls in Action)

Dames of the USO

utfit including entertainer Lorry Evering (Eve Meyer) start making their way to the next stop. But when their vehicle comes under fire and their driver is fatally wounded the troupe of entertainers along with a small group of soldiers must try to make their way to safety across enemy country.

When "Operation Dames" which is also known as "Girls in Action" starts we watch a scene of two men spying on the attractive Lorry as she gets dressed. It is a scene which wouldn't have been out of place in a Carry On movie and it makes you think that "Operation Dames" is just going to be a daft war movie featuring sexy stars. But then a few minutes down the line we get some drama as the troupe end up under fire and it feels more like a proper war movie. The trouble is that it flicks back and fourth going from comedy to trying to do drama and depth which makes it very uneven.

Being uneven is not the only problem with "Operation Dames" has as director Louis Clyde Stoumen's style seems basic at the most. We get long distance shots where nothing much happens and then we get close ups, but that is it and the simplicity of it all does nothing to make it entertaining.

Of course there is the little matter of the acting which from all involved is utterly forgettable, although when you hear some of the corny dialogue they have to work with it is little wonder why the acting is weak at best. But then "Operation Dames" ends up being a movie built around Eve Meyer and her shapely figure with as much of it on show as possible for as long as possible.

What this all boils down to is that "Operation Dames" is a poor move and struggles with many things from flitting between comedy to drama all the time to the actual acting. What that means now over 50 years after it was released, well it is entertaining but more in a bad movie way than for anything else.
