Rob Schneider in The Hot Chick (2002)

Creaky Friday

Head cheerleader Jessica Spender (Rachel McAdams - Guilt by Association) is the most popular girl at school who gets away with murder. When she heads to the mall with her friend April (Anna Faris) they visit a new age store where Jessica steals an antique set of earrings. What Jessica doesn't know is that these earrings have magical qualities. Well she doesn't know till the next morning when she wakes up and some how her spirit is in the body of petty criminal Clive (Rob Schneider - Big Daddy) and his spirit is in Jessica's body. Whilst Jessica's spirit looks for a way to get back to her body Clive's spirit has fun being in the body of a hot chick.

Can someone just confirm for me, comedies are meant to make you laugh aren't they? I ask because 20 minutes into "The Hot Chick" I hadn't laughed once; I hadn't laughed at Clive getting brain freeze when he put his head under a Mr. Slushy machine and I didn't laugh when Jessica came home to find her younger brother wearing her lipstick and holding her bra up against him self. I didn't even laugh when the old switcheroo took place and we had Rob Schneider waking up in Jessica's room, wearing her clothes and freaking out when he went to the toilet. Basically I got through the whole 104 minutes of "The Hot Chick" and don't remember laughing more than just a handful of times.

Anna Faris in The Hot Chick (2002)

Now in fairness "The Hot Chick" is aimed at a young audience, the early teen group who still find gags about people falling down stairs funny. But it has to be said that pretty much every joke and every aspect of "The Hot Chick" is cliche from the body switch to the hot girl cheerleaders. I suppose if I think back to my days of being 12 and 13 this might have been amusing but somehow I think even 12 and 13 year old me would have found this boring very quickly.

The daft thing is that "The Hot Chick" is full of jokes from Schneider going head first down a set of steps through to what seems an obligatory cameo from Adam Sandler as a hippy with dreadlocks. But whilst crammed to the credits with jokes the majority of them come up short of the mark as do the performances with Anna Faris being about the only one who comes out of this looking good.

What this all boils down to is that "The Hot Chick" didn't work for me and was one of those movies where almost every single joke whilst clear to be seen failed to make me laugh. As I said maybe young teens will find it amusing but for grown ups it is likely to bore.
