Matt Lanter and Jenn Proske on Vampires Suck (2010)

Toothless & Jokeless

Becca Crane (Jenn Proske) finds herself moving to Spork town to live with her father Frank Crane (Diedrich Bader) seemingly oblivious to the spooky goings on in the town. But she finds herself torn between two men, the ghostly white Edward Sullen (Matt Lanter) a member of a family of vampires and her childhood friend Jacob White (Chris Riggi) who is secretly a werewolf.

The success of a good spoof movie is not just lampooning the movies it is trying to mock but also bring in enough other humour to appeal to those who might not have seen the movies in question. That is one of the major reasons why "Vampires Suck" basically sucks; it doesn't have the humour to appeal to those who don't watch vampire movies and in particular the "Twilight" series. Now in some ways I can understand why as bringing in more general humour and even slapstick would have diluted one of the jokes, the joke that the "Twilight" movies are dull as this is even duller, but yet it needed more random comedy to work.

But that leads me to the irony of "Vampires Suck" because it stays mainly focused on lampooning the "Twilight" series of movies you need to have watched them to get half of the supposed jokes. The thing is that the audience for "Vampires Suck" are those who hated the "Twilight" movies who then won't get the jokes if they hated the original enough not to watch any of the other movies. And sadly those who probably would get the jokes are those who loved "Twilight" so much that they would find lampooning it an insult.

But the problems keep on rolling to put it simply the majority of the jokes fall flat. Name changes, fights in the background and plenty of other things end up so lame and unoriginal that very little in "Vampires Suck" makes you smile let alone laugh. About the only thing which is good about the movie is Jenn Proske who as Becca Crane is far more entertaining and attractive than Kristen Stewart.

What this all boils down to is that "Vampires Suck" does quite literally suck and is one of the least funny spoof movies going whose audience are sadly those who won't get the jokes.
