Ice Cube in xXx2: The Next Level (2005) (aka: xXx: State of the Union)

As Cool as Ice

Trouble is brewing in the USA as a splinter group from the U.S. military lead by former 4-Star General George Deckert (Willem Dafoe) are trying to overthrow the government, killing the President in the process. Agent Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) knows Deckert well having led a mutiny against him and has now recruited former US Navy SEAL Darius Stone (Ice Cube) to become a new xXx. But whilst Gibbons and Stone are dealing with one renegade faction there is another splinter group within the Government.

Be loud, talk quick, talk tough, act tough, give attitude and rely on the special effects department to do the rest. That is "xXx2: The Next Level" described perfectly as there is nothing else to this movie. But in fairness if you are a 15 year old teenager who enjoys super agent movies but also enjoy characters who are full of attitude and think they are street then maybe this will entertain. Trust me when I say this isn't a movie for those who want to be engaged by a storyline as this has that feel of being written on the fly with subplots tossed in on a whim.

What this all boils down to is that in truth if "xXx2: The Next Level" came out when I was a teenager I probably would have found it entertaining but as a grown up this was too much nonsense for this movie reviewer even if I am an action movie fan.
