Kate Bosworth, Katie Aselton and Lake Bell in Black Rock (2012)

Between a Rock and an Over the Top Place

Despite past issues including sleeping with another's boyfriend, three high school friends; Abby (Katie Aselton), Lou (Lake Bell) and Sarah (Kate Bosworth) head to a remote island where as teenagers they buried a time capsule. But whilst there is tension between them things take an unusual turn when they discover they are not alone as three survivalists are on the island, one of which they know as the younger brother of an old high school friend. But after the girls invite the guys to share their food things turn nasty when Abby kills one of them after he attacks her and it now becomes a battle of survival.

Watching "Black Rock" I had a feeling I had watched the movie before, I hadn't but the general premise of some old friend in the woods having to battle to survive against some guys with guns has been done before in various guises. As such there is a sense of familiarity to the screenplay as well as a sense of ridiculousness because is a scene when the three girls are all tied up and the movie isn't even half way through well you know someone or all three will have to escape because it is too early to kill them all off.

But the story in "Black Rock" isn't my issue; in fact I could watch the movie again if it wasn't for the ridiculously bad characters. The three women not only fail to convince you that they would go camping on a remote island but they are so loud and annoying that early on if a couple of them died it wouldn't have been a bad thing for the sake of the movie. But it is not just the women as Jay Paulson's attempt to deliver some psycho with a gun style horror as one of the men is terrible and over the top. And that is the trouble with everything in "Black Rock" it is over the top which makes it painful.

What this all boils down to is that "Black Rock" was not for me and over the top and annoying characters spoil what could have been a potentially entertaining survival movie. Maybe those who are fans of Lake Bell and Kate Bosworth might enjoy it but it is a long shot.
