Holy Night! (2011)

A Christmas Figurine Story

Christmas is coming and on one side of the room is the Christmas tree which is where the Santa and the Elves figurines come to life when the lights go out. And on the other side of the room is the Nativity display where also each night the figures come to life. Unfortunately the two sides can never agree and so when Santa's sleigh and the baby Jesus go missing the two sides blame each other. Fortunately elf Sam and nativity figurine Sarah join forces to try and solve the mystery and bring peace to the night time world.

First things first and let me just say that "Holy Night!" is likely to entertain a young, under ten audience the most but it isn't completely pointless if you are older. Now I have to say that as someone older I do have mixed feelings about this 2011 animation starting on a high because I like the idea that we have nativity figurines at conflict with the Christmas tree figurines giving us a clash between the old and the new. Of course with them coming to life when the lights go out means it is just a variation on "Toy Story" but it is still entertaining especially as we have a mixed bag of characters, some more comical than others.

But then there is the story of an elf and a nativity figurine going on an adventure to try and find the sleigh and the kidnapper of baby Jesus whilst the rest of the two factions argue and blame each other with things escalating between them. To be honest whilst there are some jokes throughout this most of the time this failed to really grab my attention. The irony is that the reason had nothing to do with the animation style which has an almost video game style, as in a bit clunky. In fact despite not having say the detail of bigger budget animations some of it actually makes you smile.

What this all boils down to is that "Holy Night!" is a bit of a mixed bag as whilst the storyline didn't really grab my attention I like the basic idea and the actual animation work has a slight charm about it even if it is clunky in places and looks more like what you would find in a video game.
