Sarah Butler in I Spit on Your Grave (2010)

What Goes Around

Writer Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) has left the city and rented a remote cabin in the woods so that she can focus on her new book but on the way there having got lost she ends up embarrassing a garage attendant who tries flirting with her. Along with his friends they force their way in to the cabin where Jennifer stays and what starts out as intimidation turns into torture, physical abuse and rape. But before they finish her off Jennifer manages to escape, throwing herself into a fast moving river and disappearing, thought dead by these violent friends. But Jennifer doesn't die and she is coming back to make each and every one of them pay for what they did to her.

If you knew then what you know now would you have done anything differently? As a rule I usually say no as the things I have got right and those which I have got wrong have made me the person I am now. But there are times when I do wish I had done things differently and those including wishing that I had never watched a movie which is exactly what I am feeling now having watched the less than entertaining remake of "I Spit On Your Grave".

Now I have nothing against revenge movies, in fact I grew up on many a movie about someone seeking violent retribution for a wrong doing. And to be honest I am indiscriminate when it comes to who gets hurt and who does the hurting because these movies are all about what goes around comes around. But when a movie seems to take too much delight in the graphic humiliation and torture of a woman including raping her it makes me too uncomfortable. And that is what I felt watching "I Spit on Your Grave" a sense that too much focus was placed on the graphic side of Jennifer's torture and rape including further flashbacks of it.

Unfortunately "I Spit on Your Grave" also feels like a movie out of balance so when it comes to Jennifer getting her revenge the graphic nature is lost. I don't know whether it was intentional or just happened that way but in doing so it adds to that almost glorification of watching a woman suffer instead of watching her get payback with each time the payback being dealt with incredibly quickly.

What this all boils down to is that for me "I Spit on Your Grace" takes things too far when it comes to being graphic and veers too much towards being torture porn for those who get off on the idea of watching a woman suffer rather than watching her get her revenge.
