Siren (2010)

Seduced by the Artwork

Three friends meet up for the weekend with a plan of hiring a boat and escaping the city for a bit of relaxation on the waves in the sun. But things don't turn out that way when after picking up a stranger they see struggling in the water not only does he die but they end up stuck on a small island as their motor ends up broken. It is there that the three of them become seduced by this beauty who they encounter and things get seriously messy between them all.

"Never judge a book by its cover"; for me that phrase, in relation to movies, has almost always been about don't judge something as being bad because the cover looks bad. But once in a while that phrase turns around and just because something has an appealing cover doesn't mean the movie will be any good. That is the case of "Siren" whose artwork whilst basic has a horror like appeal as we have a bikini clad woman in a sexy pose holding a big knife. But it quickly becomes apparent that the tempting artwork is the best thing about "Siren".

Now truth be told I like the storyline to "Siren", three friends seduced by a mysterious beauty on an isolated island, it is full of potential not just for some erotic cinema but also character built emotion and jealousy. Sadly the atmosphere to deliver this never materialises and as such the erotic nature of the story never really seduces you and often ends up distinctly dull. The same with the characters and as such the individual emotions of lust, jealousy and so on never present themselves in an effective way. Even the horror aspects when they start to kick in have a knack of leaving you under-whelmed.

What this all boils down to is that "Siren" ends up a waste of a semi decent idea and is certainly not the movie the cover suggests it is. But whilst "Siren" is disappointing for not reaching the level of entertainment I hoped for it is by no means utterly terrible, just depressingly poor.
