Pick N Mix

I think I must have been in my late 20's when I first heard of Tenacious D as someone told me I had to listen to this hilarious song and whilst I can't remember the song I clearly remember how funny it was with its comical use of swear words and catchy melody. Since then well I hadn't heard any more of Tenacious D but a lot about Jack Black as he became a Hollywood star. But that all changed when "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" came out, a movie which certainly embodies the music of the band. It is the musical side of "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" which is entertaining as when you get pass the expletive ridden songs the rest of the movie is just some typical Jack Black comedy and unless you are a huge fan it becomes a movie which often struggles.

As storylines go "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" is pretty simple to explain as not only is it the fictional story of how Tenacious D came to be as Jack met Kyle on the streets of Hollywood but it is also about their quest for the pick which all great rock guitarists use in order to become great. That is it and for fans of Jack Black it is enough as it gives him plenty of opportunity to bust out some of his regular comedy moves with the wide eyed look of interest. It also offers up some comical parts such as Ben Stiller showing up under a wig as a guitar shop assistant who tells them about the pick made from the devil's tooth. The trouble is that unless you are a huge fan of Jack Black and his brand of humour all this can become a bit monotonous.

Where "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" is at its best is when it focuses on the music and it digs a huge hole for itself by starting the movie with a brilliant musical intro. It sets the expectations high but sadly it is unable to maintain the same level of musical entertainment ending up using the musical moments sporadically. Of course the music of Tenacious D is not going to be for everyone and will shock those who have never heard one of their comically expletive ridden songs before but they are genuinely the best thing about the movie with their melodies and quick fire rhyming lyrics.

What this all boils down to is that "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" is not for everyone and in many ways a movie very much for fans of Jack Black. But if you've ever heard and enjoyed a Tenacious D song the musical elements of the movie will entertain.
