The Greed of William Hart (1948) starring Tod Slaughter, Henry Oscar

The Resurrectionists

The tale of two body snatchers Hart (Tod Slaughter) and Moore (Henry Oscar) who would resort to grave robbing and murder in and around Edinburgh to provide cadavers for Dr. Cox (Arnold Bell). The grave robbing doesn't go unnoticed and eventually.. well watch and find out.

Let me talk about "The Greed of William Hart" the movie for a moment and what we have is a very theatrical and frankly hammy tale of two body snatchers. The sets are clearly on a stage and the way the fog moves in is incredibly unnatural. But I am not criticizing it for feeling false as this is a movie over 60 years old and whilst I am no expert on the movies of Tod Slaughter is a reasonable representation of the actors work towards the end of his career. And the double act of Slaughter and Oscar works nicely and in truth are the best thing about the movie as they provide hammy entertainment.

But let me tell you what the most interesting thing about "The Greed of William Hart" is and that is that it was originally a direct version of Burke and Hare the infamous grave robbers. But after filming had finished there were various objections to the movie and the use of the names Burke and Hare which forced the producers to re-record the vocals and dub over it to change the names which cost a fair bit to do and is why other than the music over credits it lacks a musical score.

What this all boils down to is that "The Greed of William Hart" is a bit of movie history which whilst moderately entertaining for those who enjoy old movies is more of a movie for film aficionados looking to tick another movie of their list. What I must point out is that there appears to be two versions of the movie, the 80 minute original and an edited version which comes in under the hour.
