The Inbetweeners 2 (2014)

The Boys Go Down Under

Will (Simon Bird) has discovered university life is not what he thought it would be whilst Simon (Joe Thomas) finds himself in a relationships with a psycho girlfriend he can't get out of. So the friends along with Neil (Blake Harrison) decide to head down to Australia where Jay (James Buckley) is on a gap year and according to his regular texts is it living it large. Well Jay is certainly not living it large and so with a bit of convincing by Will the 4 mates decide to do the touristy thing and do some travelling around Australia which of course doesn't go smoothly.

What is the difference between "American Pie" and "The Inbetweeners"? Of course there are a lot of differences but also some obvious similarities with them both being sex comedies. The thing is that for me when in "American Pie" Stifler goes on about getting tail it is comically funny where as in "The Inbetweeners" when Jay goes on about f@#king it is just coarse. It is the same throughout with a scene involving Neil getting his privates licked by a dog just far too graphic and so for me it becomes coarse rather than comical and to be frank it comes across as trying too hard to shock.

This brings me to "The Inbetweeners 2" a movie which like the first movie has left me a little torn. I can understand why it is loved by many; the Will, Simon, Neil and Jay generation but for me the whole thing is trying too hard to be comically shocking. The aforementioned dog and testicles scene is just one of many examples where the writers go too far and lose the comedy factor of a scene and in truth it kind of spoils the movie as there are plenty of fun gags in there especially those surrounding Simon and his psycho girlfriend.

What this all boils down to is that "The Inbetweeners 2" was not the sort of comedy which works consistently for me but for the younger crowd I can appreciate why many would love it.
