Doug Bradley in Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines (2012)

The Hills of West Virginia Have Eyes

It's that time of year when a small West Virginia town finds themselves inundated with young revellers having shown up in costume for the legendary Mountain Man Festival on Halloween. For Billy (Simon Ginty) and his friends they can't wait to get there but before they do they find themselves in a road accident having nearly run over the creepy Maynard (Doug Bradley) who attacks them with a knife. It leads to Sheriff Angela (Camilla Arfwedson) throwing them all in the cells as she found a whole pharmacy's worth of drugs in Billy's car. But Maynard has three mutant boys who have a lust for flesh and will stop at nothing to not only get him out but kill as many people as possible.

That is a long synopsis for "Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines" as whilst it has a storyline which basically has a woman sheriff and a few teenagers trying to hold off the mutant boys on the outside what you get in this horror movie is little more than a series of gore scenes. As such you watch waiting for One Eye, Saw Tooth and Three Finger to cackle as they capture someone and either smash their legs with hammers, cut open their guts or basically do something bloody and depraved to them. And yes the scenes of horror are entertaining almost in a cartoonist sort of way thanks to the almost humorous nature of these 3 mutants but that is almost the only thing which "Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines" has going for it.

Now I said almost and for the most the casting in "Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines" is nice but forgettable with a collection of attractive young men and women. But then you have those 3 mutants and the guys playing them certainly make them a humorous bunch to a point of almost having a touch of the Three Stooges about them. But the star of "Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines" is Doug Bradley and the ominous nature which he gives Maynard as he leers out from behind bars almost has a touch of the Anthony Hopkins/Hannibal Lecter about him. It is Doug Bradley who makes the movie and it is his creepy scenes which are the most memorable.

What this all boils down to is that "Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines" is mostly about the blood and gore which is okay but it does make it all a little basic. But it is the performance of Doug Bradley which manages to stop this from ending up completely tedious.
