The Smurfs 2 (2013)

Blue in Paris

Evil wizard Gargamel has become a huge celebrity after a clip of him performing magic lit up the internet and how he has a regular magic show in France. The trouble is that Gargamel still needs essence of Smurf to perform his huge tricks and whilst he has created a couple of creatures that he calls Naughties they are not Smurfs. It is why Gargamel and the Naughties kidnap Smurfette as she holds the key to how to make them full Smurf. With Smurfette abducted Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy and Vanity seek out the help of Patrick and Grace to try and rescue her.

If you watched "The Smurfs" because you remembered the little blue characters from your childhood but found it a bit generic then I suggest you give "The Smurfs 2" a miss as this movie is for children only. We have an even more generic storyline as Smurfette ends up kidnapped and we have an accident filled attempt to rescue her. There are some new characters including the introduction to Patrick's step dad who he doesn't see eye to eye with but all this storyline is a set up for lots of visual gags.

As such if you have a child and you want to keep them amused then "The Smurfs 2" is probably going to succeed as there is a lot of simple comedy and plenty of visual set pieces including a fly through Notre Dame or at least I think it is Notre Dame. It is simply the sort of movie which will entertain young eyes who don't need anything more than comedy and visual entertainment.

What this all boils down to is that "The Smurfs 2" is not a bad movie because it works for its intended young audience. But once again it doesn't offer up a lot for grown ups who remember The Smurfs from their childhood.
